The aim of this project was to design a novel residential complex comprising 20 houses, complete with private green areas, swimming pools, and dedicated parking spaces. Situated in Sternes, Chania, amidst a burgeoning residential landscape driven by the escalating demand for tourist accommodations in Crete, the intervention area boasts a commanding topography, offering panoramic vistas of the Souda bay. The layout of the houses and accompanying open spaces is oriented towards the north, capitalizing on the site’s natural features while ensuring each residence enjoys unobstructed sea views through a gradual descent towards the shoreline.

The housing typology is delineated into four distinct categories based on floor area and layout structure, as well as two categories based on the number of levels. Two-storey residences with smaller footprints per level are strategically positioned at the periphery of the plot to optimize panoramic views and foster an intimate ambiance throughout the complex. Conversely, ground floor residences, occupying larger footprints, are staggered within the central area of the plot.

Access to the residences is facilitated via roads from both the north and south, segregating vehicular traffic and ensuring seamless movement within the complex. Adequate private parking provisions are made to prevent congestion and maintain the integrity of the residential environment.

The density of the proposed residential structure, compounded by vehicular access requirements, necessitates creative solutions to mitigate the risk of an overcrowded environment. To address this challenge, planted roofs are incorporated into the design, enhancing green space at various levels. These rooftop gardens seamlessly blend with the surrounding open areas, offering continuity within the landscape while also integrating the housing structure harmoniously into
the olive grove-dotted hillside. Additionally, the selection of locally sourced materials, such as native stone and earth-toned plaster, further enhances the architectural coherence with the broader built environment.
