Aroni is a quiet settlement in the Akrotiri municipality, located just 11 km from the city of Chania on the road to the airport. It has seen rapid development and urban enhancements aimed at revitalizing public spaces, infusing the area with a modern vibe while retaining its picturesque charm.
Historically, Aroni has been recorded in Venetian census data as early as 1583 and remains a vibrant part of the local tradition and history. Its name is said to have originated from a Venetian noble, Aronis, who was the first resident of the area. The Tower of Aroni, preserved to this day, stands as one of the village’s most distinctive landmarks. In the village square is the Church of Panagia, a central point for the community. Additionally, there is the unique Church of Saint Spyridon, built within a catacomb, while the old Church of Saint Nicholas adds another layer to the village’s religious tradition. One of the most well-known local stories involves Saint Nicholas Church, which is said to have saved the village from the Turks. During a Turkish raid, a bullet struck the church's bell tower, alerting the residents to the danger and enabling them to evacuate the village in time.
The Akrotiri peninsula in Crete lies east of Chania and was formerly known as Kyamon, called Harakas by the Byzantines.
Akrotiri is a peninsula of particular significance, not only due to its proximity to Chania but also because it hosts Chania’s international airport. It forms the northwestern side of the Souda Bay, home to the largest port in western Crete. Its highest peak is Skloka (528 m). The western side of Akrotiri holds the graves of Eleftherios Venizelos and his son Sophocles Venizelos, a tribute to the prominent Venizelos political family, as well as the headquarters of the Cretan Revolution, the airport, and Souda port. There are also monasteries of great interest in Akrotiri, such as the Holy Trinity Monastery of Tzagarolon, the Lady of the Angels Monastery of Gouverneto, and the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist of Korakies (Nun’s Monastery). The famous Stavros Beach, where Anthony Quinn danced the iconic syrtaki in Michael Cacoyannis’s legendary film "Zorba the Greek," is also located here.
Additionally, Akrotiri is home to the Technical University of Crete, which includes the following schools: Production and Management Engineering, Mineral Resources Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chemical and Environmental Engineering, and Architectural Engineering.
