History
The name Daratsos originates from the surname of the settler family, the Darazzo family, a noble lineage from Chania. During the Greek Revolution of 1821, Daratsos, which was inhabited by Cretan Muslims (Turkocretans), became a battleground between Greek revolutionaries and Ottoman forces. The settlement is mentioned in the Egyptian census of 1834 as "Darazús."
In 1881, it belonged to the Municipality of Perivolia and had a population of 328, of which 174 were Greeks and the remaining 154 were Turkocretans. In 1894, according to the estimation of a Greek army officer, Nikostratos Kalomenopoulos, the village was home to 37 Greek families and ten Turkish families. Conversely, in 1900, according to the census of the Cretan State, Turkocretans formed the majority of the population.
By 1920, the settlement was referred to as Daratsos with a population of 260 residents. Administratively, it belonged to the Municipality of Chania until 1936, when it was annexed to the community of Galatas. In 1943, it became the seat of the community of Daratsos. In 1991, the settlements of Kato Daratsos and Makry Toichos were annexed to Daratsos.
