ABOUT THE AREA

Kokkino Chorio

Kokkino Chorio

Located at an altitude of 150 meters above Plaka, it is situated 27 kilometers from Chania. Above the village rises the hill Drapanokefala, while northwest of the village lies Cape Drapano. The area is rich in caves, such as "Petsi o Spilios" (also known as Karavotopos) and the "Katalymata" in the center of the village. At Cape Drapano, 10 meters below the sea surface, is the famous "Cave of the Elephants", featuring a chamber measuring 60 by 60 meters, decorated with stunning stalactites and stalagmites.

One of the area's caves holds historical significance. During the Greek Revolution of 1821, 150 women and children sought refuge here. Despite the cave's difficult entrance, the Ottoman forces discovered them and tragically slaughtered them.

The Kokkino Village in Apokoronas is an emerging area with excellent potential in real estate, combining traditional charm with natural beauty and easy access to the city of Chania. The area offers a low entry cost and significant potential for returns through various investment strategies. To make the most of the area's opportunities, the following are recommended:

• Renovation and revival of traditional Cretan houses to create themed tourist accommodations.
• Development of luxury villas or holiday homes to support agritourism and the tourism industry.
• Creation of small boutique tourist complexes, targeting high-end tourists seeking authentic and peaceful experiences.

The strategy for the area can combine tourism development with activities that highlight local production and Cretan tradition, enhancing hospitality and benefiting the local communities.

Municipality of Apokoronas

The Municipality of Apokoronas is one of the seven municipalities of the former prefecture and the current Regional Unit of Chania in Crete. It stretches from the Gulf of Souda to Krapi and from the Mousselas River to Kerameia.

This region has been continuously inhabited since antiquity, with evidence of Minoan settlements and sanctuaries discovered near the villages of Stylos, Alikampos, Dramia, and Fylaki. On a hill west of Kalives, the city-state of Aptera was established during the Late Geometric period (760–700 BC). Aptera flourished during the Classical and Hellenistic eras and became one of the most important cities in western Crete.

As for the origin of the name "Apokoronas", the geographer Strabo mentions "Hippokorona of Adramyttene and Hippokoroneion in Crete," though it is unclear whether he referred to a city or a region. English traveler Robert Pashley and Greek scholar Nikolaos Stavrakis believe that "Hippokoroneion" was an ancient city in the inland area of the province, near the modern village of Nipos. However, Stephanos Xanthoudidis suggested it could be related to a sanctuary near Lake Kournas, known as "Hippokorion," which might have influenced the modern name.
